Trick-or-treating is a highlight of Halloween for many kids. They get to dress up in fun costumes, and most importantly, get tons of free candy.
Even days later, many kids have piles of leftover candy sitting around. It can be hard to finish it all in a reasonable amount of time!
Of course, even if kids could finish it all, they probably shouldn’t. Candy isn’t exactly the healthiest of foods and can lead to health issues like cavities.
One person who knows that all too well is a Wisconsin dentist named Chris Kammer. Seeing all of the candy kids had after Halloween inspired him to create a Halloween Candy Buyback program to support troops overseas.
How it works is dentist offices participating in the program buy back Halloween candy from kids for $1 per pound (with a 5-pound limit).
The program was founded back in 2005 and has been a wild success. The program expanded from Wisconsin to have participating dentists nationwide.
It’s a sweet way to tell our troops that we appreciate them, and give them a little taste of home while they’re away.
